Pavilion at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center at night

Are you looking for a place to enjoy performances and visual arts? Add the Maui Arts & Cultural Center to your list of “To Dos” while on Maui! The MACC, as the center is fondly known, is multi-faceted. It serves as a world-class visual and performing arts space where popular artists are enjoyed and a venue where education is offered. The MACC also offers drinks and dining in the Yokouchi Founders Courtyard before almost every show, with services during intermission.

The MACC has been described by the Maui News as “the artistic and educational heart of an entire community.” It opened its doors in 1994. For over twenty years, it has been Maui’s go-to multi-disciplinary arts facility. Here you can experience everything from jazz music and ballet, to Bruno Mars and stand-up comedy. You can also catch uniquely Hawaiian performances that are offered nowhere else in the world.

The MACC is home to the Schaefer International Gallery for visual arts. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is free. Make a stand-alone trip to the gallery or visit before a show. From May 21 to July 16, 2017, the exhibit is Piero Resta: Illuminatus.

The retrospective exhibition honors local Maui artist Piero Resta whose life work was “infused with passion and spiritual transcendence within natural and mythological worlds.” The display includes sculptures, paintings and personal archives detailing his influences and Italian heritage.

Piero, from Northern Italy, studied at the Instituto Leonardo Da Vinci prior to moving West and landing on Maui. On Maui, he built the Villa Tamarinda in Kaupo, which is a villa of Italian columns without walls on five-acres of land. The Villa is now an art sanctuary. Piero’s art covers the walls of many Paia galleries and Maui restaurants.
