From the sparkling ocean waters to the dramatic and lush island landscape, there is an abundance of raw beauty to draw inspiration from. It is no wonder that Maui is among the best places to stay for just about anyone, especially the creative types. Whether you are here to lounge in the warm Hawaiian sunshine or to create your next piece of art, this free Maui event might be something you will want to add to your travel itinerary.
Officially kicking off on Saturday, February 2, the Annual Maui Open Studio event is modeled after the studio events held each year on the mainland and offer the chance for the public to interact with local Hawaii artists. Hosted over the course of three weekends in February, you will have the opportunity to venture to the artist’s venue and learn about the inspiration of each piece. Venues can range from home studios, gallery settings, and other alternative exhibition spaces. Many artists even treat guests to refreshments, music, and live demonstrations!
So what does Maui Open Studios look like?
Weekend 1: February 9 and February 10 (11 AM – 6 PM)
Here you will have the option to explore art studios of West, North, Central, and East Maui artisans. As one of the top things to see in Maui, we are sure that you have plans to hit the Road to Hana and we suggest stopping by some of the open studios along the way!
And for those that want to stick to exploring a little closer to their oceanfront vacation rental, there are a number of West Maui studios to check out throughout the weekend. Some may include the galleries that line the famous Front Street!
Weekend 2: February 16 and February 17 (11 AM – 6 PM)
Focusing on Upcountry Maui, you can talk story with the artists that call the slopes of Haleakala National Park home. In addition to connecting with local artisans, you can also purchase the pieces of work that most speak to you! And while you are wandering the upcountry area, why not stop by the Alii Kula Lavender Farm for a peaceful break in between traveling from one studio to the next?
Weekend 3: February 23 and February 24 (11 AM – 6 PM)
To wrap up this unique thing to do on Maui, the Annual Open Studios finishes in South Maui where you can catch a glimpse at the local talent before launching an adventure at Molokini, a snorkeling destination! There are also a number of tasty Maui restaurants to fuel up on food and drinks before enjoying more exciting island activities.
If your upcoming Hawaii vacation happens to align with one of these weekends, we hope that you take the time to support the creative local businesses here. They manage to capture Maui’s natural beauty and many have been featured in many of the 2 and 3 bedroom condos for rent around the island.
