Hawaii is home to a melting pot of cultures that have blended into a mix of traditions still shared and celebrated today. The first week of April brings an exciting two-day cultural event in Lahaina Town that is free and open to the public. If you are looking for something family-friendly to do while on your Maui vacation, wander from your Kahana Village beachfront rental to kick off the Annual Chinese Kite Festival on April 6!
Beginning that Friday afternoon at 2 pm, Wo Hing Museum and Cookhouse of famed Front Street invite you to enjoy displays of ancient and modern kites from around the world with the chance to purchase your own. There will also be presentations on Ancient Chinese Kites as well as East Indian Kite Fighting, followed by the opportunity to design and decorate your very own kite. Children games and traditional Chinese music will also be available for entertainment with cultural food for sale.
For those of you who made or purchased a kite the night before, starting Saturday morning at 10 am on an open space lawn off of Honoapiilani Highway by the Lahaina Cannery Mall colorful kites in all shapes and sizes will take to the sky! And if you missed the chance to make your own, kids and teens will have yet another opportunity to create their very own kite to fly. An acrobatic sports kite master, Robert Loera, will also be giving a special demonstration along with some other pros.
So while you are filling your itinerary with Maui adventures for the whole family, this lively cultural event might be something that you want to experience.
