Headed to Maui? Get to Know All About Lahaina Town!

Stay at Kahana Village and get to know Maui’s best. Lahaina is a historic town on the West side of Maui. In the early nineteenth century, from 1802 to 1850, Lahaina was the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii and a frequented whaling village.

Today, Lahaina is the largest town on Maui with a thriving scene of art galleries, shopping, restaurants and activities. Lahaina was once known as Lele, meaning “relentless sun.” As the name Lele suggests, Lahaina is a warm, sunny and dry town situated just below the West Maui Mountains (Mauna Kahalawai) along the coast.

There are two ways to get to and from town, though only one is rental car approved. The main commute route on Honoapiilani Highway offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and neighboring islands. Planning a day trip on the “back route,” Kahekili Highway, requires advanced planning and should be cautiously considered. Features of the trip showcase nature in it’s raw form and should be attempted by the experienced adventurer. The journey includes  lush plant life, the famous Nakalele blowhole, incredible hikes and sweeping panoramic ocean views. The Kahekili route is largely uninhabited but those who do live on the backside offer a glimpse into a more traditional way of life.

In town, the congregation place is undoubtedly Front Street. Spend a laid back day exploring all that this street has to offer and be sure to have some shave ice at Ululani’s! Of course, there are an ample amount of fantastic beaches and ocean activities. Head to black rock for a snorkel or book a boat tour that leaves from the Lahaina harbor. During the winter, Lahaina is one of the best spots for whale watching. Some of our favorite spots for watching surfers are Olowalu and Launiupoko Beach Park.

For those who enjoy arts & culture, you will want to experience Ulalena, an award winning show portraying Hawaii’s history and deep connection to mythology. The New York Times calls it a “a tragic and beautiful depiction of Hawaii’s history, mythology and people.” Luau’s also guarantee a great time! Lahaina is home to two of the best, the Old Lahaina Luau and the Feast at Lele.

Book with Kahana Village today to stay at our tropical Beach Houses in wonderful Lahaina town!
